Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

Phillips School – Laurel focuses on supportive, individualized education for students ages 8–21 whose needs have not been met in traditional settings, using a strengths-based model to address academic, behavioral, emotional, and social development. Instruction is differentiated and aligned to each student’s IEP in small, self-contained classes, supported by an integrated, trauma-informed, multi-disciplinary team with de-escalation supports and related services. The program also emphasizes social-emotional learning and building independence through career and life-skills preparation.

Admissions

PHILLIPS School – Laurel enrollment is typically initiated through a student’s public school system during an IEP meeting; the district then sends PHILLIPS a referral file (which may include the IEP, FBA/BIP, evaluations, and transcripts) for review. (phillipsprograms.org) PHILLIPS reviews the referral, contacts the family to arrange an in-person interview, and evaluates whether an appropriate placement is available; the final placement decision is then shared with parents and the county in writing. (phillipsprograms.org) For private placement, families/consultants are instructed to contact the Laurel campus directly (laureladmissions@phillipsprograms.org / 301-470-1620) for more information. (phillipsprograms.org) The website states PHILLIPS generally serves students with a range of learning, behavioral, and developmental needs, notes it does not usually accept students whose primary concern is active substance misuse, and indicates it follows non-discrimination regulations. (phillipsprograms.org) No application deadlines, waitlist procedures, or admissions priority categories are described on the Laurel campus page or the organization’s enrollment page; the only Laurel “key dates” provided are on the school calendar (e.g., first day for students is August 20, 2025 for the 2025–2026 calendar).
