Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

The School at Columbia University describes its curriculum as “knowledge-based constructivism,” designed to make learning take place in real life through essential questions, themes, and concepts that teachers and students develop together. It emphasizes an integrated, inquiry-driven approach across disciplines that supports collaborative problem-solving and deep thinking, while differentiating instruction based on mastery, learning style, and student interests in a socially and emotionally supportive, academically challenging environment. Admissions

Updated 8mo ago

The School at Columbia University uses an inquiry-first process that begins in mid-August (about a year before enrollment), with different pathways for Columbia-affiliated families and neighborhood families; the first step is submitting the online inquiry form or contacting the Admissions/Enrollment Office. For the 2026–27 cycle, neighborhood inquiries were accepted August 15, 2025–October 31, 2025 (then entered into a neighborhood lottery), while eligible Columbia-affiliated families receive applications by email beginning the first week of November; in both cases, application receipt does not guarantee a space. Key requirements include eligibility rules (Neighborhood: NYC Public School District 3 or 5 residency; Columbia: a parent/guardian must be a full-time Columbia Officer category eligible for the Primary Tuition Scholarship and live in NYC at enrollment), no admissions testing (e.g., ERB) and no application fee, and typically kindergarten applicants turning 5 by August 31 of the enrollment year; the process also includes a child visit and an internal school assessment. For 2026–27, the application deadline was noon on December 1, 2025, school reports were due December 12, 2025, notifications were sent in early February 2026, and contracts/deposits were due mid-February 2026. Priority categories include an early sibling process limited to kindergarten siblings of currently enrolled students, and for Columbia-affiliated seats a group-based priority in the general lottery (Group I professorial-rank officers of instruction; Group II other academic officers such as library/research/teachers and other officers of instruction not in Group I; Group III officers of administration). Waitlisted applicants may be offered admission if space opens, but the waitlist remains active only until the start of the school year and does not carry over (families must reapply the next cycle).
