Teaching Approach

Updated 7mo ago

The Phillips Academy describes a relationship-centered, highly supportive teaching approach built on respect, integrity, cooperation, resilience, and humor. Its philosophy is that all students can learn when given personalized plans, explicit skill-building strategies, positive reinforcement, and a safe environment where students have a voice. The school also emphasizes collaboration with families and the community, and it adjusts instruction and behavioral supports continuously based on student progress data.

Admissions

Updated 7mo ago

The Phillips Academy’s admissions process is built around referral and fit rather than a standard online application: inquiries may start from a school district, parent/legal guardian, physician/therapist, advocate, or other recognized agency, after which families are invited to tour and the school may observe the student in the current placement. (thephillipsacademy.org) Admission is aimed at middle/high school students with special needs, and the published requirements include that the student be physically manageable by current staff, that staff and parents/guardians agree the school is a good fit, that the enrollment contract be accepted, and that tuition/payment arrangements be settled; the handbook also says students are typically district-referred and all enrolled students have an IEP, with tuition generally covered by the referring district. (thephillipsacademy.org) After contact and conference, the student may visit the designated classroom for a day (or 1/2 to 2 full days on the admissions page), staff and family review fit, and the Executive Director and/or Principal makes the final placement decision before required forms are completed. (thephillipsacademy.org) The school does not publish traditional admissions deadlines or a formal waitlist policy on the admissions page or in the 2025 family handbook; the key timing it does publish is a 30-day trial/diagnostic placement followed by an IEP review within 30 days, and it reports that about 98% of initial 30-day placements are preserved. (thephillipsacademy.org) The website also does not list formal priority categories, but it says acceptance depends on the availability of openings in the identified classroom, the referred student’s needs, the current classroom composition, and the relevant district/contract arrangement, with a newer pilot allowing a small number of private-pay placements when district referral is not forthcoming.
