Teaching Approach

Updated 7mo ago

UNC Hospital School uses a flexible, student-centered approach designed to keep students learning during medical treatment with as little disruption as possible. Teachers coordinate with each student’s home school when they can, and when outside assignments are unavailable, they use brief assessments to provide individualized instruction through bedside teaching, one-on-one support, small groups, and adapted materials matched to each child’s needs. Admissions

Updated 7mo ago

UNC Hospital School does not describe a traditional admissions or application process; instead, it provides year-round educational services to school-age children and adolescents while they are hospitalized at UNC Hospitals. (unchs.chccs.org) Eligibility appears to be based on being a patient receiving medical care (inpatient and certain outpatient settings), and the school serves PreK–12 students through age 19 who have not yet graduated from high school; services are free for families. (unchs.chccs.org) The school’s teachers provide instruction (often daily unless medical circumstances prevent it) and coordinate coursework/credit with a student’s home school, including providing an attendance/absence letter at discharge. (unchs.chccs.org) The website does not list admissions key dates, an application deadline, a lottery, or any waitlist/priority categories for enrollment into the Hospital School program. After-School Care

Updated 7mo ago

As with all public schools in North Carolina, our services are free for families.

UNC Hospital School provides year-round PreK–12 instruction to students through age 19 who have not yet graduated from high school, supporting students’ education during medical care (located inside UNC Hospitals). I did not find any after-school care / extended-day child care program details specific to UNC Hospital School on the school’s website.
