Bard High School Early College DC emphasizes learning through writing, discussion, and inquiry, operating on the belief that many adolescents are ready for serious college-level work earlier. Instruction is rooted in Bard’s Writing & Thinking pedagogy (critical reading plus frequent short writing to develop thinking and voice) and inquiry- and discussion-based seminar courses, including a two-year interdisciplinary Seminar Sequence built around close reading and interpretation of seminal texts.

Bard High School Early College DC (Bard DC) is a DCPS selective high school program that uses the My School DC application to apply and be considered for a match. Applicants must submit a My School DC application and complete Bard DC’s required components (including an in-person individual interview and an on-site essay/writing assessment); Bard DC also requires math and English teacher recommendations (submitted through My School DC). (bhsec.bard.edu) Eligibility/requirements: DC residents applying for grades 9–11 (current 8th–10th graders), and Bard DC notes it does not use middle school records or standardized tests for 9th-grade admissions, though it reviews report cards for transfer 11th graders; My School DC’s selective-high-school requirements list report cards (final SY24–25 and first quarter SY25–26) and a recommended 2.0+ GPA. (bhsec.bard.edu) Key dates (SY 2026–27): Bard DC stated applicants needed to complete all required steps by February 1, 2026, while My School DC’s high school application deadline was February 2, 2026; submissions after those deadlines are treated as post-lottery/pending applications. (bhsec.bard.edu) Waitlist: My School DC manages waitlists; for DCPS selective programs, post-lottery applications are put in “pending” status until the school determines eligibility and assigns a rank, after which students are placed on the waitlist in rank order and offers are made in that order. (myschooldc.org) Priority categories: DCPS selective high schools/programs do not offer lottery preference categories (e.g., in-boundary/sibling/proximity), so priority is based on the school’s admissions criteria/rubric rather than lottery preferences. Bard DC does not appear to list a dedicated paid after-school childcare/aftercare program on its website. The Bard DC student handbook states that dismissal is at 3:30 p.m., and notes that academic spaces like the Learning Commons and the Computer Lab are available before and after school for students to do schoolwork. Separately, the Student Activities Center supports student-led clubs and DCIAA athletics.
