Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

Richard Wright Schools emphasizes a student-centered learning environment that builds strong writing skills and vocabulary while connecting students to both classical and modern texts. Their approach is hands-on and experiential—especially through journalism and media arts—using creative production, skill-building, and professional partnerships to help students develop academically, creatively, and for college and beyond.

Admissions

Updated 8mo ago

Richard Wright PCS for Journalism and Media Arts participates in the citywide My School DC common application and lottery for DC residents applying to grades 8–12, with the SY2026–2027 application opening December 15, 2025 and lottery results released March 27, 2026. Families apply through MySchoolDC.org; if matched (or later offered a seat from the waitlist), the school contacts families with next steps and enrollment options (online upload, scheduled in-person appointment, or the Enrollment Saturday on April 25, 2026 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m.). To keep the seat, required enrollment items are due by May 1, 2026, including DC residency proof, birth certificate, health physical with immunization record (or appointment card), dental form (or appointment card), and IEP/504 documentation if applicable; final report card and (for grades 10–12) transcripts are due by June 30, 2026. If required documents (including DC residency by May 1, 2026) are not completed by the deadline, the student can lose the seat and must reapply through My School DC. The school’s listed lottery priority categories are (1) Sibling Attending and (2) Sibling Offered, and students not initially matched may remain eligible for waitlist offers through the My School DC waitlist process.

After-School Care

Updated 8mo ago

I could not find any information on Richard Wright PCS’s website confirming that a dedicated after-school care/aftercare program is offered (with posted hours and pricing). The site does list after-school extracurricular options such as sports and clubs (e.g., Art Club, Debate Club, Guitar Club, etc.), but these are described as student activities rather than an after-school care program.
