School for Community Learning uses a progressive, whole-child approach centered on community, collaboration, and intrinsic motivation, emphasizing deep understanding over competition, rote learning, and heavy reliance on grades/tests. Learning is inquiry- and project-driven, often interdisciplinary, with students actively helping shape questions and work toward real audiences. Curriculum is built around sustainability and interconnectedness, supported by multi-age classrooms and cross-age relationships that build social-emotional skills and community responsibility.

School for Community Learning (SCL) asks families to start by completing the online enrollment application on their Enrollment page; after you submit it, SCL contacts you to confirm and walk you through next steps. Families are encouraged to take a school tour (students can attend) and then schedule a student shadow day after the application is received. To finalize enrollment, families complete enrollment paperwork in person and submit a $50 registration fee to secure the student’s spot (applied toward the year’s materials fee), and families with an IEP or Choice Scholarship Education Plan (CSEP) are asked to provide it so SCL can confirm supports are a good fit. For the 2026–27 year, SCL states applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and lists the first day of school as Wednesday, August 12, 2026. If a grade has more applicants than available seats, SCL says it may run a random lottery from online applications received between September 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025; students not offered a seat are placed on a waitlist and contacted if space opens, and SCL notes priority is given to siblings of current students and children of SCL employees.
