Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

The Neighborhood School describes itself as a progressive public elementary school that builds on each child’s strengths in a safe, nurturing environment, with practices rooted in anti-bias and anti-racist work across the school community. Its interdisciplinary, inquiry-based and project-based curriculum is shaped by children’s interests and developmental needs, integrates subjects through in-depth thematic studies, and uses hands-on experiences (including trips, concrete materials, dramatizations, and simulations). Students learn collaboratively with social-emotional learning woven throughout, and the school emphasizes social justice and developing students as researchers and activists.

The Neighborhood School (PS 363M) is a NYC public elementary school; the legacy domain theneighborhoodschool.org was not reachable when checked, but the school’s admissions guidance is posted on its current site (tnsny.org) and NYC DOE enrollment pages. () Families apply through NYC DOE using MySchools (or by phone/at a Family Welcome Center) and should list/rank The Neighborhood School on the 3-K/Pre-K/Kindergarten application for the relevant year; admissions are not first-come, first-served and prior-year applications are not reused. (tnsny.org) Key dates for Fall 2026 entry include: Kindergarten application opens December 9, 2025, closes January 23, 2026, and offers release March 31, 2026; 3-K and Pre-K applications open January 14, 2026, close February 27, 2026, with offer releases May 19, 2026 (3-K) and May 12, 2026 (Pre-K). (schools.nyc.gov) Priority categories include (per the school/District 1 “Diversity in Admissions” policy) Group 1 applicants (FRPL-eligible, in temporary housing, and/or Emerging Multilingual Learners) vs Group 2, plus sibling priority and priority for District 1 residents (District 1 is a “district of choice,” so NYC residents can apply even if they don’t live in District 1). (tnsny.org) After you receive an offer, registration typically requires proof of age, immunization records, and proof of address (with special provisions for students in temporary housing), and families can be placed/participate in waitlists via MySchools—students are automatically waitlisted for any higher-ranked choices and can optionally join additional waitlists when they are open.
