Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

Pathways School—Edgewood emphasizes individualized instruction paired with hands-on, experiential learning that can occur in a traditional classroom or in community-based settings, depending on student needs. Its programming integrates academic coursework (aligned to county/state curriculum) with therapeutic supports and transition/vocational services (e.g., career exploration, job shadowing, internships) to help students build independent living and work-readiness skills. Admissions

Updated 8mo ago

Pathways’ Horizons page states the Horizons program closed and was consolidated with The Pathways School – Edgewood (with Edgewood moving to the Beltsville location for the 2023–2024 school year), so admissions are handled through Pathways Schools’ central admissions process rather than a separate Horizons application. To apply, referral packets from the Local School System (LSS) are sent to the Pathways Schools Admissions Coordinator, who screens each packet and forwards it to the appropriate program for review. The program Principal reviews records, typically schedules an interview with the student and parents/guardians, and if the program can meet the student’s needs an acceptance letter is sent; enrollment may include an IEP meeting with the LSS placement specialist, and in some cases placement can be immediate without an interview. Admissions eligibility/requirements listed include an emotional disability as the primary disability, with certain secondary disabilities (e.g., specific learning disability, mild intellectual disability, traumatic brain injury, autism spectrum disorders) possibly considered; histories of serious violence/property destruction or serious substance abuse are evaluated for program fit. The website does not list application deadlines or key dates, and it does not describe a waitlist process or any priority categories.
