Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

Collegiate School describes a research-informed teaching and learning program designed specifically “with boys in mind,” focusing on practices that help most boys learn and flourish. Their approach emphasizes helping boys be themselves, build authentic relationships, learn by doing, and explore broadly within a liberal-arts program, while also developing leadership. Teachers aim to meet students where they are while holding high expectations, encouraging appropriate risk-taking and learning from mistakes with grace.

Admissions

Updated 8mo ago

For the 2026–2027 school year, Collegiate’s application process opens September 2, 2025; families submit the application (with an optional photo and student work sample) by November 14, 2025, and admissions events begin in early October (including in-person Open Houses on October 16 and October 23, 2025, with required registration). (collegiateschool.org) For Kindergarten, the school report must be submitted directly by the current school by January 5, 2026, and families complete a required virtual parent/guardian interview plus a required in-person applicant visit; for Grade 9, applicants also submit ISEE (ERB) or SSAT scores by January 5, 2026 and two teacher recommendations (English and math) by January 5, 2026. (collegiateschool.org) Requirements noted include that Kindergarten applicants must be age 5 by September 1 of the kindergarten year, personal recommendation/“first choice” letters are not required, and only complete files are considered. (collegiateschool.org) Decisions are announced in early or mid-February 2026 (depending on grade), while sibling/legacy families are notified in early December, and Collegiate describes an early-notification approach for sibling/alumni (legacy) Kindergarten applicants with required appointments completed by the end of November and school reports due December 1, 2025. (collegiateschool.org) For non-entry grades (possible limited openings in Grades 1–8 and 10–12 due to attrition), families can submit initial materials and the school will follow up after February 2026 if an opening allows the full process to proceed. (collegiateschool.org) Collegiate notes that required interview/visit appointments can become subject to an appointment waitlist after slots fill (so applying early helps), but it does not describe a separate post-decision admissions waitlist policy on these pages. Collegiate School lists an After School program for the Lower School, describing a “warm, nurturing environment” with faculty and outside instructors leading classes for cross-grade groups (K–1 or 2–4). The page also describes “Extended day” as a supervised space as an extension of the school day, where K–4 students play games/sports, do arts & crafts, and complete homework. For Middle School, the page notes an After School Help Center (ASHC) available Mondays–Thursdays with “no cost associated with the program.” The page states there is “no formal after school program” in the Upper School.
