P.S. 99 emphasizes improving literacy—especially reading proficiency—so students meet or exceed grade-level expectations, using data-driven instruction, targeted interventions, progress monitoring, and a literacy-rich environment. Their instructional focus also stresses building teacher capacity in “Advanced Literacies Instruction” by strengthening classroom discussion across all grades, using structured participation routines (e.g., Think-Jot-Pair-Share and other discussion protocols) and ENL supports to ensure all students can engage.

P.S. 99 Kew Gardens is a zoned neighborhood elementary school; its school website (ps99.org) does not appear to publish school-specific admissions steps, so families generally follow NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) elementary admissions via MySchools and/or enroll directly if it is their zoned school. For Fall 2026 entry (children born in 2021), the kindergarten application opened December 9, 2025, closed January 23, 2026, and offers are scheduled to be released March 31, 2026. Applications can be submitted online in MySchools, by phone (718-935-2009), or in person at a Family Welcome Center, and admissions are not first-come, first-served. If you miss the deadline or want a different placement, you can join MySchools waitlists; students are automatically waitlisted for any higher-ranked choices than the program they were offered, and schools contact families if a seat becomes available. When registering/enrolling, families should bring proof of age, immunization records, and (if available) the latest report card/transcript, plus two proofs of address; for zoned schools, priority generally goes in this order: in-zone with sibling, in-zone, then (if space allows) sibling in-district/out-of-district, current pre-K at the school (in/out of district), other district residents, then out-of-district residents.
