DREAM Charter Schools in East Harlem center their teaching on a “Grow the Whole Child” model, combining rigorous, critically conscious academics with social-emotional learning so students develop both strong critical-thinking skills and positive identities/relationships. The approach also emphasizes students’ physical and mental health and deep family/community partnership (e.g., ongoing communication and shared decision-making), with the goal that every child is “known, seen, and loved” and supported to thrive.

DREAM Charter School East Harlem (grades K–8) enrolls students through a free, random lottery; families can apply online through DREAM’s application page (and they also offer a print application option). Applications should be submitted by the lottery deadline (described by DREAM as typically in early April). The application asks for basic student and parent/guardian information, the campus/grade you’re applying for, and includes eligibility guidance (for example, for Fall 2026 Kindergarten, the child’s birth date must be before January 1, 2022). Applications received after the lottery deadline are placed on a waitlist in the order they are received. DREAM lists lottery preference categories including siblings of current students, children of current staff, applicants living in NYCHA/public housing, and students covered under the McKinney-Vento Act; for East Harlem specifically, preference is given to students who live in NYC Community School District 4, with a special preference for students living in NYCHA housing in CSD 4.
