Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

E.L. Haynes emphasizes rigorous, relevant instruction while grounding learning in trusting and loving relationships between students and staff. Their curriculum is designed to build students’ mastery and perseverance as learners, develop agency and an equity- and justice-oriented leadership mindset, and strengthen kindness and intercultural competence as community members.

Admissions

Updated 8mo ago

E.L. Haynes PCS–High School (grades 9–12) admissions are handled through the My School DC common lottery; for the 2026–27 school year, the high school application deadline was February 2, 2026, and families who missed it can submit a post-lottery application to join waitlists. (elhaynes.org) Lottery results are released March 27, 2026, and families who receive a match must complete enrollment by May 1, 2026 (E.L. Haynes also notes returning-family re-enrollment by May 12). (enrolldcps.dc.gov) After matching/accepting an offer, families complete E.L. Haynes registration (via Infinite Campus) and provide required documents such as DC residency verification, health/dental forms and required immunizations, and a birth certificate (as applicable). (elhaynes.org) If the school is full, applicants are placed on a waitlist that is ordered by preference group and then random lottery number; waitlists are only for that school year, and enrolling at a matched school does not remove a student from other waitlists. (myschooldc.org) Priority categories (lottery preferences) listed for E.L. Haynes HS are: children of staff, sibling attending, then sibling offered; the school also indicates it will offer Equitable Access designated seats, which are applied based on OSSE eligibility tied to consent in the My School DC application. E.L. Haynes’ Extended Day Programming (EDP)/before- and after-care is described as being offered for elementary and middle school students, not high school. For high school (grades 9–12), the school highlights after-school extracurricular activities, and the 2025–2026 high school back-to-school guide states: "Students, except OSSE bus riders, are expected to leave campus upon dismissal."
