Teaching Approach

Updated 7mo ago

Longfellow describes its approach as providing equitable access to rigorous, responsive instruction while building strong relationships with families and the community and using data-driven continuous improvement to improve teaching and accelerate learning for all students. The school also emphasizes an inclusive, welcoming culture with consistent behavioral expectations and social-emotional learning, and its improvement plan highlights Universal Design for Learning, collaborative planning, explicit instruction, and targeted supports to strengthen engagement, belonging, literacy, and math achievement. Admissions

Updated 7mo ago

Longfellow’s website sends families to Oak Park District 97 registration, which is completed online through the district’s enrollment system; the registering adult must be the custodial parent/guardian, must already live in Oak Park, and should use the district attendance map/address tool to confirm whether their home is zoned for Longfellow. (op97.org) For the 2026-27 school year, District 97 says kindergarten and new-student registration opens on January 21, 2026, returning-student registration opens on January 28, 2026, and the kindergarten page says registration is open through July 1, 2026; approvals can take about two business days during the school year but roughly two to four weeks during the spring/summer cycle. (op97.org) Required items for new students/include an official long-form birth certificate, a current government photo ID for the parent/guardian, Oak Park residency documents such as a lease or home-ownership record plus supporting bills, custody papers if applicable, health/immunization records, and an Illinois transfer form for students entering grades 1-8 from another Illinois school; incoming kindergarteners also complete the Ages and Stages Social-Emotional Questionnaire. (op97.org) I did not find a general admissions waitlist or standard published priority tiers for regular Longfellow enrollment on the site; the district materials instead describe neighborhood school assignment by attendance boundary. (op97.org) The main exception is a permissive transfer for families who move to another Oak Park attendance area but want to stay at or attend a different D97 school: requests are due by June 1, reviewed first by the district registrar and then by the principal in August based on attendance and projected enrollment/staffing, with decisions around mid-August, and younger siblings are considered only if an older sibling has already been granted that transfer.
