Teaching Approach

Updated 6mo ago

Speyer describes its teaching philosophy as a gifted-education model built around an accelerated, enriched, and interdisciplinary curriculum tailored to students’ specific abilities, with teachers who encourage deep questioning, critical thinking, and inquiry rather than limiting children by age-based expectations. The school emphasizes educating the “mind, body, and heart” by pairing rigorous academics and project-based learning with social-emotional growth, integrity, resilience, and character development in a collaborative, inclusive community. Admissions

Updated 6mo ago

Speyer says families start by submitting its online inquiry/application form through Veracross, using an email they will keep throughout the admissions season, uploading a child photo, and paying a $100 application fee; for Grades 5–7, fee waivers are listed only for applicants from Early Steps and Prep for Prep. (speyerschool.org) Lower- and middle-school families then complete a Parent Perspective and a 30-minute virtual parent conversation, and students must attend an in-person visit/assessment: Kindergarten has an onsite small-group visit, Grades 1–4 have a Student for a Day plus math/literacy assessment and a graded writing sample (or writing completed during the visit), and Grades 5–7 have a Student for a Day with math/literacy assessment and a short group interview. (speyerschool.org) Required materials also include a teacher recommendation and the most recent report card for all grades; Grades 5–7 must submit ISEE or SSAT scores from within 12 months, while Grades 1–4 may submit outside testing and Kindergarten families may upload supplemental testing if helpful. (speyerschool.org) The website currently lists a regular application deadline of December 5, 2025, supplemental materials due January 8, 2026, and for eligible early-decision applicants: application by noon on November 14, 2025, file completion and financial-aid submission by November 26, 2025, and notification on December 5, 2025; financial-aid applications go through Clarity and are due January 8, 2026 at midnight. (speyerschool.org) For priority categories, Speyer says early decision/early notification is available for siblings of currently enrolled students and for children of school staff and faculty, though they are still evaluated individually under the same criteria as regular applicants; I did not find a published student-admissions waitlist policy on the admissions pages, and the only explicit waitlist reference I found was for spring tour registration if tour slots are full. General Afterschool is a great option for students who want to get ahead on their work, read independently, or enjoy choice time. General Afterschool meets during both periods and offers students the ability to explore their passions, relax after a long school day, and choose between different choice options that will be provided daily.
