Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

Harbor Science and Arts Charter School emphasizes a rigorous academic program that also integrates character-building, physical wellness, and the arts to prepare students for higher learning and positive contributions to society. In practice, it uses structured and knowledge-building curricula (e.g., balanced literacy and science-of-reading aligned phonics in early grades, and coherent K–8 ELA/math programs) to develop strong reading, writing, communication, and math foundations. Its science instruction blends hands-on investigations with literacy-rich activities and digital tools, aiming for students to meet or exceed core performance standards at grade level.

Admissions

Updated 8mo ago

Harbor Science and Arts Charter School (HSACS) enrolls students (grades K–8) through a lottery-based admissions process; families must submit an admissions/lottery application to be considered. For the 2026–2027 school year, applications are due by April 7, 2026 at 4:00 PM to be included in the lottery, and the lottery is scheduled for April 10, 2026 at 1:30 PM (virtual and in-person); HSACS notes their application window typically begins after their annual December open house and continues until further notice. You can apply online via their lottery form (a copy is emailed to you) or request a paper application by emailing enrollment@harborcharter.org or calling 917-261-2700 ext. 204 or 230. Applications submitted after the deadline are not entered into the lottery and are placed directly on the waitlist (and HSACS notes late applicants may not receive confirmations); waitlist numbers are assigned by a random number generator per grade and seats are offered by phone in waitlist order as openings occur, and families must reapply each year because waitlists are voided at the end of each school year. Lottery priority is described as (1) siblings of currently enrolled HSACS students, then (2) applicants who live in NYC Community School District 4, then (3) a general lottery for all remaining applicants.

HSACS indicates students may attend after-school programming: (1) For grades K–5, “students in grades K–5 attending an after-school program will be brought directly outside for pick up by their after-school program.” (2) For grades 6–8, HSACS references a “Harbor Charter/SCAN Harbor Middle School After School Program”; once it begins, “students in grades 6–8 will be expected to stay for the after-school program unless a parent has contacted Ms. Ramos” to request dismissal instead. The handbook does not list program end time or cost.
