Teaching Approach

Updated 6mo ago

The Hotchkiss School describes its teaching approach as interactive, inclusive, and discussion-based, with small classes where students are expected to speak up, disagree, learn from one another, and build resilience by taking risks, failing, persisting, and succeeding. It frames learning as both intellectually rigorous and holistic: faculty aim to nurture curiosity, honor, and integrity while helping students develop imagination, intellect, openness, empathy, and responsible citizenship through a broad education that prepares them to engage fully with the world. Admissions

Updated 6mo ago

Hotchkiss says applicants should first submit an admission inquiry form, then schedule an interview, take required standardized tests, and complete the Gateway to Prep Schools application; the online application includes the Candidate Profile, Candidate Project/essays, parent statement, school record, and teacher recommendations, and the fee is $75 with waivers available by request. (hotchkiss.org) Required materials listed publicly include essays, a parent statement, principal/counselor recommendation, official transcript/report cards, English and math teacher recommendations, a personal recommendation, and test scores; 9th–10th grade applicants submit SSAT or ISEE, while 11th–12th/PG applicants submit PSAT, SAT, ACT, or SSAT, and many international applicants must also submit TOEFL, Duolingo, or IELTS unless they have studied for 3+ years in English. (hotchkiss.org) For the current published 2026 entry cycle, the application and financial aid deadlines are January 15, 2026, admission decisions are released March 10, 2026, the student reply deadline is April 10, 2026, interviews run from mid-September to mid-January, and the sample application says test scores must arrive by January 25; Hotchkiss also notes interviews are recommended but not required, except homeschooled applicants must interview before review. (hotchkiss.org) I did not find a public Hotchkiss waitlist policy on the admissions pages reviewed; the FAQ only says late applications are more competitive and may still be considered through the summer depending on space. (hotchkiss.org) Hotchkiss also does not publicly label formal admissions priority categories on these pages, but its inquiry form and sample application explicitly ask whether a parent is a current employee, current/past Hotchkiss parent, or alumnus/a, whether other relatives attended, and whether a sibling is applying, so those appear to be tracked as special relationship categories. After-School Care

Updated 6mo ago

Not Available

Hotchkiss lists only "Infant through pre-school childcare" at the Cynthia White Childcare Center (dependent on space availability). The school is a boarding school for grades 9 through 12, and all students — including day students — are assigned a room, so I did not find a separate after-school care program for school-age children.
