Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

Central Park East I emphasizes learning by doing through hands-on, project-based work where children design long-term investigations, navigate setbacks, and develop solutions. The school aims to develop thoughtful citizens in a democratic society by encouraging student choice while expecting responsibility and discipline in learning and social behavior, in classrooms shaped around children’s developmental needs, interests, strengths, and passions. Learning is supported by a collaborative community of educators, families, and students, with regular outdoor study and reflective work on identity and community.

Admissions

For pre-K and kindergarten, Central Park East I (CPE1) directs families to apply through NYC Public Schools via MySchools (and enrollment help is also available by phone—e.g., 311 and the DOE enrollment line—and at Family Welcome Centers). For the 2026–2027 school year (fall 2026 entry), NYCPS lists these key dates: kindergarten application opens December 9, 2025 and closes January 23, 2026 (offers March 31, 2026), and pre-K application opens January 14, 2026 and closes February 27, 2026 (offers May 12, 2026). Eligibility/requirements are set by NYCPS (e.g., NYC residency and age-based eligibility—kindergarten in the year a child turns 5, pre-K in the year a child turns 4), and CPE1 notes that families seeking entry for grades 1–5 should submit contact information to the school. Waitlists are managed in MySchools after offers are released: students are automatically waitlisted for any higher-ranked choices, can optionally join additional waitlists while they are open, and schools contact families directly if a seat becomes available. Priority categories are determined by NYCPS and shown on the program’s MySchools listing; NYCPS describes common priorities such as district priority and (where applicable) pre-K-to-kindergarten continuity, and reporting about CPE1 also notes priority for students in Manhattan’s District 4.

Available
For students in kindergarten and older, there are several free options, plus one paid option.

CPE1 families can sign up for their child to be transported to nearby after-school programs. Program staff meet students at dismissal, pick them up from CPE1’s courtyard, and walk them to nearby sites; some students can take a yellow school bus to a West Side option. Listed options include free (DYCD-funded) programs such as Children’s Aid Society and SCAN-Harbor, plus additional options (e.g., Boys Club of New York; fee-based ACT at St. John the Divine; and a pre-K option through Wildarts).
