Admissions

Updated 7mo ago

To apply/enroll, families (or the student’s current public school unit) should start by contacting GMS’s Enrollment Coordinator (phone 984-292-3033; email is listed on the school’s Admissions page). (governormorehead.net) An application for admission may be submitted by a parent/legal guardian or upon recommendation of a local education agency or charter school, and (per the GMS handbook) eligibility for enrollment is described as NC residents ages 5–22 attending a North Carolina public school. (4.files.edl.io) For an admissions decision, GMS gathers information such as formal assessments, teacher recommendations, health information, functioning/adaptive skills, and the student’s IEP; GMS also schedules an observation at the student’s current school before the admissions committee meeting, after which the Director/designee makes the final decision and issues a summary letter. (4.files.edl.io) Admissions requirements posted for GMS include evidence the student has blindness/visual impairment adversely affecting educational performance and that the student’s primary educational needs require GMS’s specialized programs, plus minimum functional/self-care skills and no safety/medical needs beyond the school’s capacity (and no substantial disruption risk). (4.files.edl.io) Key timing noted in the posted procedures includes that if the student is found eligible (or offered a temporary assignment), an IEP team convenes within 7 school days to develop an IEP (or temporary IEP) and set a start date; temporary assignment status is described as up to 90 school days. (4.files.edl.io) The admissions materials posted publicly on the GMS site do not describe an admissions waitlist process or priority admission categories, and they also do not list application deadlines/windows (instead directing applicants to contact the Enrollment Coordinator).
