Teaching Approach

Updated 8mo ago

P.S. 234 describes a culturally responsive, supportive learning environment that values every student’s ability to succeed, with the arts (alongside STEAM) as a core driver of learning and long-term impact. Their instructional focus emphasizes close reading and evidence-based discussion/writing in literacy, plus conceptual understanding and multiple representations with strong mathematical communication and collaborative problem-solving in math, supported by clear, measurable goals and strong family partnership.

Admissions

P.S. 234Q directs families to apply through NYC Public Schools’ MySchools system for both Pre-K and kindergarten (their calendar also notes to go to MySchools to apply). (ps234queens.org) For the 2026–2027 school year, key dates are: Pre-K application opens January 14, 2026 and closes February 27, 2026 (offers May 12, 2026), and kindergarten application opens December 9, 2025 and closes January 23, 2026 (offers March 31, 2026). (schools.nyc.gov) When registering after you receive an offer, NYCPS asks families to bring proof of the child’s age, immunization records (if available), the most recent report card/transcript (if available), and two proofs of address (plus custody/guardianship paperwork when applicable). (schools.nyc.gov) Waitlists are used to fill seats after offers are released; children are automatically waitlisted for any higher-ranked programs above the one they were offered, and families can also join additional waitlists in MySchools if eligible. (schools.nyc.gov) Priority categories depend on the program, but as a zoned elementary school, offers generally prioritize students who live in the zone (and those with siblings already at the school), with additional priority tiers for district residents and others if seats remain; for Pre-K at zoned district schools, priority begins with current 3-K students at the school, then zone/sibling groups, then district and out-of-district groups.
