Teaching Approach

Updated 6mo ago

Brooklyn Heights Montessori School describes its teaching approach as rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy, emphasizing respect for each child’s individual development, natural curiosity, and capacity for independent learning within a thoughtfully prepared environment. The school combines classic Montessori principles with current educational practices, using hands-on materials, mixed-age classrooms, and teacher guidance to build critical thinking, confidence, responsibility, and a sense of peace, empathy, and community. Admissions

Updated 6mo ago

On BHMS’s 2026-2027 admissions pages, families apply online through Ravenna, and the school says you may attend a virtual info session, in-person tour, or open house before or after submitting the application. (bhmsny.org) Key posted dates include a December 1 application deadline for Twos through Grades 1-8, with prior approval required to apply to Grade 8; BHMS also says fall tours launch in mid-September and run through the winter, and tuition-assistance applications for Kindergarten-Grade 8 are also due December 1. (bhmsny.org) Publicly posted requirements include a parent/guardian interview after the application and fee are submitted, plus a student visit for Kindergarten-Grade 8 applicants; BHMS says full program-by-program requirements appear in Ravenna, and another official BHMS page lists examples such as short videos for Twos/Threes/Fours, teacher recommendations for Threes and above, transcripts for Grades 2-8, and writing samples for Grades 4-8. (bhmsny.org) I did not find a public admissions waitlist policy on the BHMS site, but the FAQ says families who miss the December 1 deadline should contact admissions directly to see whether the school can still accept an application. (bhmsny.org) I also did not find publicly posted general admissions priority categories such as sibling or legacy preference; the only published priority order I found is for tuition assistance, which BHMS says is allocated first to returning families already receiving aid, then to current families with changed financial circumstances, and then to newly applying families.
