Admissions

Updated 3mo ago

Sunset Elementary has two main entry paths: neighborhood students in the school attendance boundary register directly with the school, while applicants to the International Studies Magnet Program must apply through the M-DCPS Parent Portal. (sunsetinternationalschool.com) For regular K-5 boundary enrollment, the school says families must show the child lives within Sunset’s boundary and submit a birth certificate, DH 680 and DH 3040 health/immunization forms, two proofs of address such as a lease or deed plus an FPL bill, a parent/guardian photo ID, and transcripts or report cards for grades 1-5. (sunsetinternationalschool.com) For the current 2026-2027 magnet cycle, applications ran from October 1, 2025 through January 15, 2026; kindergarten applicants must be age 5 by September 1, first-grade applicants must be age 6 by September 1 and enrolled in kindergarten, and grades 2-5 must already know the target language because those grades require a foreign-language proficiency test, while grades K-1 do not test. (sunsetinternationalschool.com) Magnet applicants are entered into a computerized random selection if eligible, and families are told by about March 15 whether the child is accepted, waitlisted, or not accepted; first-round offers must be accepted by March 31, and later waitlist offers get 5 business days for a response. (sunsetinternationalschool.com) District magnet priority categories include active-duty military families, certain diversity priorities where applicable, veterans, sibling or multiple-birth applicants, some memorandum-of-understanding cases, and a 5% employee benefit for children of M-DCPS employees, although sibling priority does not apply to programs that require language proficiency testing, which matters for Sunset grades 2-5.
