Teaching Approach

Updated 7mo ago

Gateway School describes its approach as highly individualized, with each child placed in a pathway and learning plan tailored to their communication, educational, social, and behavioral needs. The school is language- and communication-first, integrating communication support throughout the day while using research-based, multisensory, and active-learning strategies, along with therapies and positive behavioral supports, to build academics, social development, life skills, and independence.

Admissions

Updated 7mo ago

Gateway School says families can apply either through a referral from the Local School System (LSS) or by having a parent/guardian submit an application for admission and student records; the Education Director then reviews the referral/application, schedules a pre-admission interview or tour, and invites the child for one or two half-day visits observed by an interprofessional admissions team. (gatewaymaryland.org) Admission requirements listed on the site include being age 5-15 or currently in K-8, being 5 by September 1 for kindergarten, having a qualifying diagnosis/FCI code, having academic levels in the school’s served range, and having cognitive/psychological, educational, and/or speech-language evaluations available for review; Gateway also states it may refuse admission for significant self-injury, aggression, serious maladaptive behaviors, or IEPs requiring restraint or seclusion, and says its program is not appropriate for students diagnosed as emotionally disturbed and/or with severe intellectual disability. (gatewaymaryland.org) After the visit, Gateway’s team reviews observations and eligibility, then notifies the family and/or LSS in writing; if the student qualifies and there is an opening in an appropriate classroom, Gateway sends either a private-pay financial agreement or an annual cost sheet to the LSS and then sets an agreed start date. (gatewaymaryland.org) The website does not publish admissions deadlines, application windows, or decision-release dates; the only admissions-specific date stated is that kindergarten applicants must be 5 years old on September 1, while the separate calendar page shows a school calendar rather than admissions dates. (gatewaymaryland.org) I did not find a formal waitlist policy or any published priority categories on Gateway’s site; the closest language is that placement depends on whether there is an opening in an appropriate classroom.
